The Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec, a property owned by the Canadian Islamic Trust Foundation (CITF), a former affiliate of ISNA Canada, was brutally attacked last night on Sunday, January 29, 2017 after Isha prayers (approximately 8:00PM) as congregants gathered in worship.
ISNA Canada strongly condemns the violent attack that took place on innocent Canadians in one of our religious sanctuaries. The attack left at least 6 worshippers dead and left 8 others injured.
As we see our moral conscious rise across North America, with good, law-abiding people, standing up in protest against injustice, we are acutely aware that there’s still much work to be done. These tragic events are reminders of the work we must do in order to fight Islamophobia everywhere and at all levels of government.
We are proud that the highest level of Canadian government, the Prime Minister’s Office, reiterated his pledge and commitment to open Canada’s doors to people of all faiths and religions. He also strongly condemned last night’s attack and we echo his sentiment.
ISNA Canada looks forward to speaking with law officials to ensure our Masajid, Islamic Centres, and Islamic Schools are safe spaces for our communities locally and nationally.
We offer our sincerest sympathies and prayers to all those who have been afflicted by this tragedy. Allah (SWT) says:
الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
“Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah , and indeed to Him we will return."
We also offer a reminder to the rest of our community to not despair. Turn to Allah (SWT) in prayer and ask him to help us during this time. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“Great reward comes with great trials. When Allah loves a people, He tests them, and whoever accepts it attains His pleasure, whereas whoever shows discontent with it incurs His wrath.”2 Narrated and classed as hasan by at-Tirmidhi (2396); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah, no. 146
We are in the process of contacting the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec in order to find ways for ISNA Canada to assist them in this difficult period for the community.
